iO wins two Esprix Awards with historical podcast campaign for Kamp Amersfoort

Esprix Awards is the professional prize for creative communication with precise results.

Podcast ‘De Verdwenen SS’er’ (translation: ‘The Disappeared SS man’) by Kamp Amersfoort and blended agency iO won two prizes at the Esprix Awards last night. Succeeding in the categories Smart Budget (silver award) and Charity & Not for Profit (bronze award).

In the podcast, Jordy Hubers (podcast maker) and Floris van Dijk (Head of Research at National Monument Kamp Amersfoort) search for Walter Heinrich. War criminal, mass murderer, camp commander. And vanished without a trace, even before the end of the war.

"This podcast is one of the best branded podcasts we've ever made. We contributed to history by putting a 'face' on an unknown war criminal." - Jordy Hubers, Podcast Creative at iO

‘De Verdwenen SS’er’ podcast campaign was the answer to how to get more people interested in visiting the museum. Because although 47.000 people were imprisoned there, Kamp Amersfoort was not always one of the first Dutch camps to come to mind. The results speak for themselves.

“We have produced a podcast hit where hundreds of thousands of people have listened to the podcast episodes over 900.000 times in total. Dutch media have reported massively about the podcast, including the NOS Achtuurjournaal. Subsequently, we’ve managed to reach millions of people. And as a highlight: the podcast has contributed enormously to an increase in museum visitors of up to 30% since the podcast went live. We are very proud of this, and it proves that you can make a huge impact as a brand with a unique and substantive story." - Jordy Hubers, Podcast Creative at iO

The branded podcast is one of the services that iO provides to convey stories powerfully, whether or not as part of a broader campaign or message. The agency has its in-house podcast studio and has previously made podcasts for ABN Amro, UWV and KPMG, among others.
